Interview Me...

Julia, at How Did I Get Here? is doing this fun little exercise.

(I don't know how to create a link to her so go to http://juliajuliabohemian.blogspot.com) and check out her "Interview Me" post.

The deal is I answer her questions below and offer to interview anybody who visits my blog and wants to be asked five questions that I come up with. I'm callin' out Mary, Glyn and Logan. You know and I know you want to be interviewed...

Julia asked:
1. You just found out that an important person is coming over for dinner and you only have one hour to prepare something suitable. What do you do?

I responded:
I always have ingredients for mexican food on hand. I whip up enchiladas, fajitas, corn cake, refried beans etc. and dip into my stash of mexican themed paper napkins for good measure.

Julia asked:
2.Would you ever go to a clothing optional beach?

I responded:
Yes, for research purposes... I'd wear clothing and check out all the others who consider it optional.

Julia asked:
3.Have you ever shoplifted and if so, what was it?

I responded:
Yes, age 13, I stole mascara from K-mart. Got caught, got severely scolded and warned that if I did it again, they'd call the police. That was nothing compared to what consequences I faced when I got home... I've never gone back into a K-mart again.

Julia asked:
4. You won a contest and have been given the chance to donate $10,000 to any specific cause. what is it and why?

I responded:
I would donate it to an organization that helps abused children. Since I've had children of my own, nothing breaks my heart, or makes me angrier. I can accept that lots of bad things happen, their is wickedness in the world, etc. but NOT when innocent children are abused. I definitely struggle with God about this.

Julia asked:
5. Describe your worst haircut ever.

I responded:
Short, round bobbed diddy that would look good on almost anybody but me.

I'm working on your questions. Logan...

Your CALLIN' me out? YOUR callin' me out? Your callin' ME out? Your callin me OUT? (That's my blog comment Robert DeNiro impression. How was it?) Okay, I'm waiting. And who's Logan?

good DeNiro.

I have to really THINK about your questions...

Logan is our friend here in KY. He checks out the blog from time to time and is equally or more sarcastic than me.

for you mary:

1. is it more essential to develop beliefs or gain knowledge?

2. which vice would you like to indulge in if it carried no risk?

3. is there only one soul mate for each person?

4. who are your role models?

5. would you rather be smart, athletic or good-looking?

do you want us to answer the same questions as Julia, or are you making us specific ones for each of us?

Also, Mary... the sad lack of apostrophes in your post for the correct abbreviation of 'you are' = you're, makes me think your brain may actually be shrivelling.

Interesting trivia point - did you know that Data in Star Trek:TNG cannot use contractions like 'can't' and 'wouldn't' - this seems like a handicap but it is only this limitation that enables the crew to distinguish between him and his evil twin Lore...

Also, it's very bad manners to point out grammatical errors in someone's blog entries, since it's not a formal form of writing. ;)

I recommend more frequent coffee breaks, and digesting Eats, Shoots & Leaves... (that's a book in case you were wondering)

I have that book! Sadly, yes, I wouldn't have noticed that if you hadn't pointed it out. Gee thanks. Of course, to do the DeNiro impression justice, I should have just said, "You callin' me out." He wouldn't have used "are" at all. Enough justification. I'm not perfect and now the whole world knows it!

P.S. for Glyn... I did know that about Data but it was buried deep in the recesses of my mind. Now that it has been unearthed, some other, possibly much more important bit of knowledge will be buried.

glyn - you get a different set of questions.

1. What would you most like to ask God.

2. which is of greater necessity - justice or forgiveness?

3. would you rather be a great musician, athlete, scientist, artist, politician or writer?

4. what kind of party would you throw if you had an unlimited budget?

5. number the following from least important to most important - love, excitement, success, knowledge, popularity

Okay, here goes.

1. Is it more essential to develop beliefs or gain knowledge?

I don’t think you can really do one without the other. To a degree I believe they are both essential. I think the pursuit of knowledge alone is dangerous and fruitless. If you develop your beliefs, your knowledge will grow. They follow one after the other.

2. Which vice would you like to indulge in if it carried no risk?

Drunkenness. I’ve only had maybe a dozen alcoholic beverages in my life. I don’t like the taste and I’m too afraid of losing control to ever “really” drink even if it were the most delicious substance on earth. That said, there are times when things have been a little too much and I’ve thought, “Right now, I could really use a drink.”

3. Is there only one soul mate for each person?

No. For all the stories of Romeo and Juliet, Lancelot and Guinevere, and yes, even the true love story of Davy and Sheldon Van Auken from A Severe Mercy, my absolute favorite, I just don’t believe it. I believe in chemistry between two people, compatibility between two people, history between two people. I believe these things can be strong enough sometimes to create the illusion of “the one person” for you, but again, I say, “No.” (It should be noted, for my husband’s sake, that I’ve had this opinion since 7th grade. Scouts honor! And yes, I was probably a little bit of a weirdo in junior high.)

4. Who are your role models?

As a woman, I'd have to say the BFFs! The most amazing women of God, women of honor, character, integrity who’ve been there for me in difficult times and who, as I’ve seen them go through difficult times, provide a most excellent example of submitting to the Lord for me to follow. There are other people I admire writers, historical figures, etc., but the BFFs are my real life, flesh and blood role models.

5. Would you rather be smart, athletic or good-looking?

Smart. Why change what’s been working all these years! (Cheese!)

Okay, here's my crack at some answers, but these were hard...

1. What would you most like to ask God?

There are so many questions, but here are some of the top ones:

Why do you allow the innocent and vulnerable to suffer? (yes, I know the free will arguments backwards and forwards, but they don’t satisfy)

Why did you not give Adam and Eve greater resistance to sin?

Why did YOU stay silent and allow the snake stage time without interruption?

Why do we have to die? If Jesus conquered death, why do we who follow him still die?

Why do you allow gross evil (genocide etc.) to continue, since it doesn’t seem to really help the human race learn any lessons?

Why are you so hidden? What’s the point?

Why not reveal yourself fully and unmistakably and then let people decide whether they wish to align themselves with you and your character, rather than playing hide and seek?

Why, when it would seem to be in your interests to let your people know what you want them to do, is finding your will so difficult?…

2. Which is of greater necessity - justice or forgiveness?

Justice. Justice means that what should happen will happen. Both good and bad. Thomas More said “There is no heartbreak on earth that heaven cannot mend.’ I’m trusting that this is true and that this also is justice.

3. Would you rather be a great musician, athlete, scientist, artist, politician or writer?

This is a tricky one. Probably scientist. Once I’ve cured AIDS, cancer and heart disease, I would move on to inventing drought resistant crops, parasite resistant water and solve world hunger. But, solutions to many of these problems already exist to some measure, and it’s the funding and will to implement them that’s lacking, in which case being a powerful politician with access to huge amounts of cash would help.

4. What kind of party would you throw if you had an unlimited budget?

An extended stay in Hawaii, where I’ve flown in all my friends, and we can tell stories and laugh together for days on end, culminating in a show by peepolykus, the funniest comedy troupe I have ever seen. (www.peepolykus.com)

5. number the following from least important to most important - love, excitement, success, knowledge, popularity

1. Love
2. Success (rightly understood – a rich life rather than a wealthy one ;) ).
3. Knowledge.
4. Excitement
5. Popularity.
